Permits and utility
Long Beach is its own city, separate from the City of Los Angeles. Electrical permits are issued by Long Beach Development Services, and power is supplied by Southern California Edison (SCE). Your electrician normally pulls the permit and books the inspection.
Before you hire
Check the electrician's C-10 license on the CSLB website, confirm they work in Long Beach, and get the quote in writing.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the panel. A breaker in the middle position, or flipped the other way from the rest, has tripped. Push it fully off, then back on.
- Reset GFCI outlets. Outlets with Test and Reset buttons protect kitchens, baths, garages and outdoor outlets. One tripped GFCI can cut power to several outlets.
- Unplug what is on the circuit. If the breaker trips again right away, leave it off and get it checked.
Smell burning, see sparks or feel heat at an outlet or panel? Turn the breaker off if it is safe to reach and do not use that circuit.
