EV Charger Installation in Los Angeles

A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240V circuit. Whether your home can add one without a panel upgrade depends on the panel's capacity and what else it already powers.

What the job includes

A load check, a new dedicated circuit and breaker, the wiring run to the garage or driveway, and mounting and testing the charger.

Panel capacity

Homes with smaller panels sometimes need an upgrade or a load-management device before a charger can be added safely.

Permits

EV charger circuits in the City of Los Angeles need an electrical permit. Your electrician normally pulls it.

Questions

Can I just use a regular outlet?

A standard 120V outlet charges slowly. It works for short daily trips, but most drivers want a Level 2 charger.

Hardwired or plug-in charger?

Both work. Hardwired units are common outdoors. Plug-in units use a 240V outlet that must be installed to the charger maker's specs.
