How much does a panel upgrade cost in Los Angeles?
Panel prices vary widely, because the panel itself is a small part of the cost. Labor, permits and any work at the meter or service decide most of the price.
Typical price ranges
Cost guides put the average Los Angeles panel replacement at about $2,000, with most jobs between roughly $800 and $3,200. Large upgrades that relocate the panel or increase the service size can pass $6,000. These figures are estimates from published cost data, and real quotes depend on your home.
What drives the price
The amperage you need (100A, 200A or more), whether the meter and service wires must change, panel location, the permit and inspection, drywall or stucco repair, and whether the utility needs to schedule a disconnect.
Permits
In the City of Los Angeles, panel work needs an LADBS electrical permit and inspection. Other cities, such as Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank, issue their own permits and have their own utilities.
How to compare quotes
Ask each electrician to list the panel brand and size, the permit, meter work, how long power will be off, and the warranty. Compare like for like, not only the total.
Questions
Is a 200 amp panel worth it?
If you plan to add an EV charger, heat pump, induction range or solar, many homes benefit. A load calculation shows what your home actually needs.
Are there rebates?
Utilities and state programs have offered incentives tied to electrification. Check your utility's website for current programs before you sign.
