GFCI outlet won't reset? Here's why
GFCI outlets, the ones with Test and Reset buttons, cut power in a fraction of a second when they sense current leaking where it shouldn't. When the Reset button won't stay in, the outlet is usually telling you something real.
1. There is no power reaching it
Most GFCIs can't reset without power. If the breaker that feeds it has tripped, the Reset button won't latch. Check the panel for a breaker in the middle or off position, switch it fully off and back on, then try Reset again.
2. It is still detecting a fault
If something plugged into it or into an outlet downstream is leaking current, the GFCI trips again as soon as you reset it. Unplug everything on that outlet and on the outlets that went dead with it, then reset. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. Hair dryers, old extension cords and outdoor equipment are common causes.
3. Water or moisture
Outdoor, garage and bathroom GFCIs trip when moisture gets into the outlet or a downstream box. After rain or sprinklers, an outdoor outlet can stay tripped until it dries. If it happens often, the cover or box isn't sealing properly.
4. The GFCI has worn out
GFCI outlets don't last forever. One that won't reset with nothing plugged in and power present, or one that trips at random, may simply need replacing. Many newer GFCIs are built to refuse to reset when their own protection has failed.
5. It was wired backwards
If a GFCI was recently installed and never worked properly, the line and load wires may be reversed. That needs an electrician to correct.
When to call an electrician
When it won't reset with everything unplugged and the breaker on, when it trips over and over, when you see scorch marks or feel heat, or when several outlets in different rooms are dead and you can't find the GFCI that controls them.
Questions
Why did outlets in another room stop working?
One GFCI can protect several outlets after it on the same circuit, sometimes in a different room or even outside. Look for GFCIs in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outdoors, and press Reset on each one.
Is it safe to keep resetting a GFCI?
Resetting once after a trip is normal. If it trips again right away, stop and find the cause. The GFCI is protecting you from a shock hazard.
Can I replace a GFCI myself?
It is a common job, but the wiring has to go on the correct terminals or the protection won't work. If you aren't sure, have a licensed electrician do it.
